Chemistry Department, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

  • Chemistry Department, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Electra Danko carried out steel frame, systems, and fitout work for the Chemistry Department at Ben-Gurion University, in a building intended for research laboratories and departmental offices. The project combines complex architectural tones with systems of all kinds, as well as fitout work that involves many unique elements and rare materials. It also has an exceptional architectural structure intended to house state-of-the-art laboratories. The building is home to a special room for an extraordinarily sensitive microscope – one of just a few in the world – and this demanded creative engineering solutions in order to insulate the floor from the rest of the building in appropriate ways. Unique fitout work included facades showing the chemical elements in the periodic table: the southern facade with decorative cladding and illuminated inscriptions of the elements, and the northern facade with the names of the elements printed on a glass curtain wall. The project contained a high level of infrastructure, systems, and gas pipelines not found in typical projects, in addition to the need for extensive development and landscaping work.
